Grow vegetables in an aquaponic system

2016-08-31 11:43 by Thomas

Beside taking care of children in need and installing BioSand drinking water filters we are trying to improve also farming and agricultural techniques. We had learned a lot over the past years and set up a system before and now we did install another “aquaponic” system in our children’s home. What is aquaponic? Simply said, a mix of aquaculture (rising fish) and hydroponics (grow vegetables without soil). The fish waste contends organic nutrition’s for the vegetable and they therefore clean/filter the water which is circulated back to the pond. For more details check

We have used our existing fish pond with several hundred of catfish and pump twice a day nutrition rich water into a “simulated” natural pond. From there small pipelines divert the water into half barrels where gravel is used as grow media. The roots grab the gravel and the fish water flushed through. The plants get nutrition’s and grow happily. The children’s home is on a plot of land with limited space and we used a corner where only rocky and hard ground makes it almost impossible to grow any vegetable.

The system isn’t ready yet but we are looking forward to its full production to give the children healthy and fresh produce but also showing them ways of growing vegetables other than in soil. To know more about our work and for more info, have a look at our FB and webpage,

Mother's Day in Thailand

2016-08-19 15:18 by Thomas

The 12th August is celebrated as the birthday of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit. As the Queen is also regarded as mother to all Thai people, this day is also celebrated as Mother's Day. The children in our different projects celebrated Mother’s Day as well. They did different handicrafts at school and drew pictures for their mothers to give it to them. It’s Thai tradition that children kneel down at their mother’s feet, paying respect to their mothers for everything they have done for them. They present their mother with white jasmine flowers or garlands, in return, the mothers shower their blessing on the children.

Dental check up for the kids in the mountains

2016-08-05 13:12 by Thomas

We want to say thank you to Céline, Marielle and Liza, three dental students from the University of Bordeaux in France. They offered to teach the children in the mountains dental hygiene, how to properly brush their teeth and did a brief check on the actual situation. We were so glad to have the local schools involved as well and nearly 300 children had a dental check up last week. Thank you for your dedication, time and efforts to improve the lives of those children who have mostly no chance to see a dentist at all.

Pump for Children Home

2016-05-31 13:37 by Thomas

This school year (May2016) the children's home in Mae La Noi provides education, food and a home for 12 children. So far, the fresh water was used from a nearby pond and passed through a BioSand water filter to provide safe and clean drinking water to the children. Due to the long drought and drop of the ground water level the pond dried out without hope to deliver water again anytime soon. Through the financial support of the Gesinas Stiftung and ImmunoTools GmbH, as well as the Grabbe family we could help immediately to solve the problem by digging a deep well, connected with a new water pump and pipelines into the children home. The children are so happy to have access to water again for their daily needs. On behalf of the children and our employees, but also from the Raintree Foundation and our Club, Thai Care e.V. we would like to say “Thank You” to the Gesinas Stiftung and ImmunoTools GmbH and the Grabbe family for their generous support.
